Mariah Schlossmann

Bio:

Mariah Schlossman began her career as a brand representative for theSkimm in 2014 which she is still currently involved with. During the summer of 2015, Schlossman began her career path as an intern at the Wisconsin State Assembly focusing on communications and legislative work.  She was in charge of monitoring the media accounts. After Schlossman’s summer internship, she began another internship at the CEE Bankwatch Network where she was responsible for editing press releases and reports with intensive research for leaders and media outlets in Prague. Later on, Schlossman worked as a PR Intern for Rubenstein Public Relations.  She obtained skills for strategy development for pitch ideas, writing, research, and collaboration. After that, she earned an opportunity to become a Public Affairs Reporter for the Patch.com. Schlossman produced content such as videos, graphics and online news content in Oxford, Ohio. From those opportunities, Schlossman pursued areas of interest in Communications with Movement Strategy and became a Freelance PR Associate at BerlinRosen for almost two years. From those experiences, it lead Schlossman to her current job as an Editorial Business Assistant at Cosmopolitan Magazine and recently started in July 2019.

Background:

Hearst Publications is an all access pass to globalized information and media from more than 360 different companies.  This company was started by William Randolph Hearst on March 4th, 1887. Previously before inheriting the San Francisco Examiner, Hearst initially wanted to have a leadership role in New York or the U.S. and did not getting enough votes to become the President of the United States and the New York mayor. His father decided to inherit him the San Francisco Examiner so that he would be able to settle down in the near future. From there, the company cultivated into one of the most prominent industries to become the largest publication industry in the late 19th century and was well known for the “yellow journalism” reputation. After Hearst passed away at the age of 88 from a stroke, his legacy continued. Hearst Publications was able to acquire more companies and to stay true to their platform. As of now, Hearst Publications obtained more than 360 different companies revolved around cable networks such as ESPN and Lifetime, news publications such as the San Fransisco Examiner and Times Union, and magazine publications such as Cosmopolitan and ELLE.

Current Issues/news:

News #1:

-During the first year of changes, Hearst updated the global ad team with a new approach

-This doubled the revenue and this strategy helped in the long run with audience engagement and keeping a centralized conversation

News #2:

-Australia's Cosmopolitan Magazine will end there publication after 45 years

-This decision was made because there were slow sales and ad revenue

-It was shocking to most because they recently hired a new editor, Lorna Gray, three months prior

-New programs are established in order to reduce the fear of criminal activity and community awareness
