Day Six

Alllrrrighty! Today is the last day of the program and I’m super sad. It’s been great getting to know everyone and to be in NYC learning about my dream career. I honestly had the best time during this trip and I never want it to end, but sadly I go back early in the morning after the program ends which means it’s back to reality. On our last day, we plan to visit Architectural Digest, Meredith Corporation, Global Citizen, and Group Nine.

On our first visit, we talked and learned more about Nick Mafi’s career path. He is currently a features editor for the company. Once he was telling us about his experience that evolved into his job, I automatically loved how open and real he was with his story. That kind of stuff can be challenging to tell and talking about yourself is a vulnerable act because it’s admitting the triumphs and challenges, but I liked how he made it relatable to us. It definitely made it more engaging.

Meredith Corporation was next on our list and Amanda Wolfe who is the senior director for content strategy for Health and Parenting was able to join us. Meredith Corporation focuses on branding and marketing for companies for over 25 different media and broadcasting companies . Within her job, she does a lot of research, campaign launches, projects, and overseeing different aspects of the branding overall. “How can we part of the solution? and What does it mean to you personally?” said Wolfe is an essential part to her thought process when she is in a big role overseeing two major publications. It’s about acknowledging the point of view for every platform and audience.

Then we attended Global Citizen. This company is a passionate group of advocates that want to end poverty. They have charity giveaways consisting of concerts, meet and greets, and travel opportunities for the people that donate and contribute to this cause. Our guest speaker was Cassie Carothers who’s the editor in chief of Global Citizen. She talked about her experience and how she oversees the content for 20-30 pieces a day. What I learned from this visit is to be passionate about what you’re doing. It’s “nice to know you believe in the mission of your work” said Carothers.

Our last event for the trip was Group Nine. We ended up doing an Instagram Takeover for the Miami University page and it was great to be able to share that experience with everyone. I hope it helped promote our passion and gratitude for the program because without the Miami Alumni and the universities, we wouldn’t have had the chance to travel to all of those companies. When we had the opportunity to be able to listen our guest speakers Nicole Theodore, editor for Brandshop, and Paul Ulane, director of editorial, I was able to see how close they all were as a company and as a team. The dynamic in that room was phenomenal. They felt very relaxed and seemed to have collaborated well together. That stood out to me the most because it shows how being yourself goes a long way into the business world.
